  • Description:
  • Request for proposals are invited for Consultancy Services - Assessing the Climate Vulnerability and Adaptation Capacity of Communities around the Rwenzori Mountains National Park. Assessing the climate vulnerability and adaptation capacity of communities around the Rwenzori Mountains National Park Background: Climate change is one of the biggest threats for the world with Uganda among the most vulnerable Countries. Extreme weather, droughts and floods have significant impacts on economic sectors, natural resources, ecosystems, livelihoods, and human health in the Albertine Rift (AR) landscape, particularly in the areas adjacent to Rwenzori Mountains National Park (RMNP). The region covers the districts of Kasese, Bunyangabu, Kabarole, Ntoreko and Bundibujo. Climate change also amplifies existing stress on water availability and on agricultural systems particularly in semi-arid environments. WWF Uganda Country Office (WWF-UCO), with support from Denmark and Finland, is currently implementing a NbS pilot project with the goal to enhance the resilience of ecosystem and communities, adjacent to RMNP, to climate change through wide adoption of nature-based solutions. The purpose of this project is to add a climate dimension to these two mentioned projects. However, the impact of climate hazards on communities and ecosystem around RMNP is not yet well known. There is also a knowledge gap on capacity of the affected communities, to cope/adapt and recover from the effects of the climate change. WWF Uganda Country Office wishes to carry out a study that is focused on filling these knowledge gaps. Key among the objectives of this consultancy are: (1)Identify the current vulnerability caused by the impact of climate change on the local communities of RMNP; (2) Map sites of climate hazards in the landscape and prescribe adaptive measures;(3)Identify the major ecosystems and ecosystem services of RMNP that could help the local community adapt to the impacts of climate change and to prioritize them as per the intervention requirements;(4)Record and document indigenous knowledge of RMNP communities regarding climate change in terms of past and recent climatic shifts and social-ecological dimensions; (5)Identify, with the affected communities, appropriate adaptation opportunities, including NbS to address the societal challenges and the identified impacts of climate change on the local people and ecosystems of RMNP;(6)Undertake participatory rural appraisal (PRA) (village transects, Consultations) to map the most prone sub-counties, propose interventions and pilot sites (Villages) for intervention ; (7) Conduct a capacity assessment for the communities in the identified sub counties to implement the suggested interventions and identify opportunities to fill the capacity gaps and (8)Document the status of climate change adaptation and resilience around RMNP. Interested parties may obtain the detailed Terms of Reference by sending an email to the attention of Paul Mukisa, Senior Procurement Officer, through the following address: pmukisa@wwfuganda.org. The Terms of Reference document will be issued to interested parties from 12:00noon on 4th to 12:00noon, 11th May 2021, strictly. Late requests will not be honored.
